Supersonic jet turning New York into a day trip destination from Europe
March 24, 2017 - inconnu - A jet which could turn New York into a day trip destination from Europe could be ready to fly within 10 years. The team behind the futuristic XB-1 has got the funding needed to build the world’s fastest passenger jet.It would be able to fly between London and the Big Apple in three and a half hours, almost halving the current journey time.Boom Supersonic said it received $33million USD / €30.5 million Euros £26million GBP in funding and was ready to build its XB-1 jet prototype. The XB-1- dubbed the “baby boom” – is backed by a host of wealthy tech bosses, astronauts and engineers and is tipped to be faster and more efficient than the Anglo-French Concorde. It is a technically representative â…“-scale version of the future Boom Airliner and described as the world's fastest civil aircraft “ever made.”Seats will cost the same as major airline’s business class – but budget tickets could be on the cards too, according to chief executive Blake Scholl who claimed “that’s where we’re headed over time”.Scholl said the jet, which will cost more than $200million USD / €185 million Euros / £160 million GBP to build, could be carrying passengers by the early 2020s. He said: ''This funds our first airplane, all the way through flight tests.''Now we have all the pieces we need – technology, suppliers and capital – to go out and make some history and set some speed records.“Concorde's designers didn't have the technology for affordable supersonic travel, but now we do.“We're proud to unveil our first aircraft as we look forward to its first flight.”Like the now retired Concorde, the XB-1 will fly higher than other aircraft at around 60,000ft.It will break the sound barrier, but despite the jet's name, passengers won't hear a thing.Virgin airline tycoon Richard Branson is one
